These models are still in the early stages. They are benefitting from huge inputs of researchers and dollars. Improvements are cumulative.

You are not impressed today? So what? Did you see the results from 1 year ago? The gain is staggering, and ongoing. See the Will Smith eating spagetti video, made via text to video.

AI will upend industries. Tyler Perry just cancelled his $800million studio expansion after watching text to video AI.

Gemini scales up and deploys Google’s warped woke world view into everybody’s life. That, is big brother, and that is terrifying.

Well, yes, I'm impressed. To a degree.

In a sense, I'm impressed with how rapidly that Hitler built up his military capabilities. I'm impressed that he created the first modern air force and recognized its capabilities. That doesn't mean I should LIKE it.

Being impressed is not enough.

My professional experience was in architectural woodworking. Once upon a time, all trades were truly manual; everything by hand. By the time I went into it, in the 1980s, nearly everything was machine power. And then there was CNC, computer numerically controlled machines. In short, there have been great strides in the trades, making things quicker and easier to make. But are they better? No, not really. To a large degree, they're worse. And there is little to no individual imprint on the work.

I see AI in a similar light. It can write, and it can 'paint'. But does it do it better than a craftsman? Not a chance, and I doubt that it ever will. I doubt that will ever even rise to an equal level. All it is, is quick and easy. For some, that's enough.

AI is the Ikea furniture of intellectual property. Cheap, easy, and quick. But it will never be the best. Yes, we should use the tools that facilitate our creativity and comprehension, but we shouldn't have machines do the creating, and they can't comprehend. That's for us to do. So, I use power tools more than I use hand tools, but they are still just tools, and I can still design and create at a level as worthwhile as anything that has gone before. And quicker. But, not better. Centuries ago, craftsmen created the best. I can only hope to be as good.

In my retirement, I mostly write. I no longer use a typewriter, with carbon paper to make duplicates. Like everyone, I use a word processor that is much quicker, and often (not always) catches my spelling mistakes. But it doesn't choose my words for me. It can't. Only I can choose my words. As with most writers, much of what I think, my opinions, are developed as part of the process of writing. I am what I write. What I write, I am. What am I, if AI does my writing for me?

I agree witb your comment here.

I did not pick up that argument previously. My reading of your piece seemed like a different point you were making.

I love the Ikea of intellectual property metaphor.

Can it choreograph a dance for a dance class?

Expand full comment

Does it make videos as replies? That would be so AWESOME.

Would love it. Give us bored people something fun and new to look at.

You know. Actual awesomeness . Instead of the same old snark and nothing like the rest.

Whoops misstype.

You know what I mean.

So you want an awesome dance choreograph after a couple of prompts and then you get the whole run down from soup to nuts. In a package ready for anyone to buy.

Oh yes.

Imagine that.

We are here with that technology. Not sure why it’s not promoted in this way.

Just insert any other subject . That you need a whole thing created for you.

Doesn’t have to be dance.

Wouldn’t the uncreatives love to access this kind of awesome?

Nope!

Ask yourselves WHY NOT?

And if it is able to do all these things. Let’s start promoting it. There should be more out there about the positive , MAGICAL uses of this tech. Not sure I’d call it new.

Nope. I’m not going to start reading the trade magazines. Not necessary. You guys do it. And hurry up. This world is boring.

Thanks for this. I’ve been reading Vonnnegut this year and cannot imagine AI even coming close to his originality.

Great point. Can anyone really believe that AI will enhance our perceptions rather than restrict them?
